Blessing The Water

This is a pic from the STL Post Dispatch, showing the Greek Orthodox rite of “blessing the water”, which is done in commemoration of Jesus’ baptism. I thought this pic was so engaging it became an important part of my sermon on January 11: the Holy Spirit driving Christ out into the wilderness, this priest driving a cross into the muddy waters of our world. FWIW

  1. David Ekstrand pointed out to me something I hadn’t noticed on this pic – the string the priest on the left is holding is attached to the cross…I guess to they can get it back from the river! I have no idea how to treat that sermonically. I wonder if they use the same cross every year? 🙂
