Update On Mojave Cross
Way back in September of last year I noted a Snopes article about the Mojave Cross – an 8 foot high cross located in the Mojave Desert, erected in 1934 as a memorial to veterans. 8 years ago the ACLU filed suite because the cross is on Federal property. They won. Then the VFW traded 5 acres of their (private) land with the government so that the VFW would own the cross. But the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals threw that out too as unconstitutional, and ordered the cross torn down. Off they went to the US Supreme Court. During that appeal, the naughty cross was covered from view. Whew! Thank God we can watch American Idol and the Porn network without having to expose our kids to that terrible cross!
On April 28, the Court ruled in favor of the Mojave Cross. “The Constitution,” wrote the majority, “does not oblige government to avoid any public acknowledgment of religion’s role in society.” For more on the story, click here.
So, for those who have been waiting these past 8 years, here’s the cross. Send your kids from the room. You’ve been warned!
