Mother Nature’s A Lot Tougher Than We Thought!

This AP headline caught my attention: “Signs Of Regrowth Seen In Oiled Marshes”. Here’s the first couple of paragraphs (click here for the whole article):

Barataria Bay, La — Shoots of marsh grass and bushes of mangrove trees already are starting to grow back in the bay where just months ago photographers shot startling images of dying pelicans coated in oil from the massive Gulf oil spill.

More than a dozen scientists interviewed by The Associated Press say the marsh here and across the Louisiana coast is healing itself, giving them hope delicate wetlands might weather the worst offshore spill in U.S. history better than they had feared. Some marshland could be lost, but the amount appears to be small compared with what the coast loses every year through human development.

What! WHAT!? The marsh is healing itself?? What about the catastrophe, the disaster that the oil spill was supposed to have been? What about the “delicate balance” our ecology is? Earth in the balance? Seems mother nature is a whole lot tougher than we thought she was. A real mother, you might say.

The whole idea that earth is a “delicate balance” that we humans can destroy has always seems to smell of hubris to me. It’s one thing to say that we’re stewards of our world, that we were given dominion of it by our Father. It’s another thing to to say we have the power of life and death over it. One view is humility. The other is pride.
