From The Pastor At St. Paul's UCC, Freeburg, IL

Just what is community? I hear and read the word being used to mean something like “interest group” – the artistic community, for example. Is it really a community when people don’t know each other, or have face-to-face with each other?

I look around some of our geographic communities – in St. Louis there are a bunch of them, known as suburbs – or even in small towns like the one I live in. Increasingly I hear things to the effect that “we don’t know our neighbors anymore”. At least, compared to the way we used to know our neighbors. Are these still communities? Yes in a geographic sense. No in a relational sense. That face-to-face knowing of each other is disappearing with technology, agenda overload, and a bunch of other factors.

Here’s a video, then, that has made me think about what community is, and how it happens. The line that sticks with me: community isn’t about us, it’s about God.
